WineRelease.com's September 15, 2011 Monthly Newsletter.

Greetings from WineRelease.com, now 1,786 winery listings strong.

Last weekend, my wife and I and a few close friends attended Kendall Jackson's 15th Annual Heirloom Tomato Festival, benefitting the School Garden Network. This is always one of our favorite annual winery events and as usual, delivered strongly against our high expectations.

There were about 175 varieties of heirloom tomatoes for tasting (with many of the seeds for sale in the gift shop), 30-40 booths set up around the periphery of the area, containing local Sonoma restaurants tomato dishes for sampling and judging, and a Chef Challenge cook-off competition, featuring several of Bravo's Top Chef contenders from Season Six, (like Jennifer Carroll and Kevin Gillespie).

Some of our favorite dishes included a Thai crab tomato gazpacho garnished with a piece of tempuraed bacon from Sea Thai Bistro, Shimos horseradish panna cotta with bay shrimp and a light tomato sauce, and the shortbread basil cookie with a tomato jelly thumbprint from Cookie... Take a Bite. Kendall Jacksons wines were flowing amongst the food booths as well, and coupled with absolutely perfect weather (low 80s with a slight breeze), we could not have asked for a more perfect afternoon.

My friend Rachael, me and my pregnant wife Chris (our baby girl is due to arrive October 24th).

Satiated with the delicious food, wines, and enough packets of seeds to keep us in heirlooms for some time, we left the event very full, happy and pleased with a day well-spent. We look forward to continuing this annual tradition in the years to come and cant wait until next year.

Shifting gears slightly, I wanted to share with you some exciting news coming out of the Taylor Family Foundations Annual Charity Auction. The Taylor Family Foundation (The Taylor Family Foundation) is run by my good friends, Barry and Elaine Taylor, and each year TTFF provides a once-in-a-lifetime camp experience for almost 3,000 children during the summer and on select weekends, who are living with life threatening illnesses or are at-risk youth. In its 20-year tenure as a foundation, TTFF has helped more than 40,000 children attend camp and has provided respite for nearly 70,000 parents.

For one of the auction items, Elaine asked if I would cook a paella dinner for a group of 20. As some of you know, my wife and I spent the past few years living abroad in Spain, and I had the opportunity to train with a seasoned paella cook coming out of the Valencia region. Maribel taught me that it takes 10 attempts before its even palatable, and Im approaching 30 right now, so Im getting there. (Heres a picture of Maribel and me in Tenerife, priming the pan for my first lesson)

The dinner ended up going for $14,000 in the auction and was so popular that they offered two - Im telling myself that the real attraction is dinner at Elaine and Barrys house (and bottom line is the benefit for the kids), but I imagine Ill spend a good bit of time next spring leading up to these dinners, making sure that my paella is worth that $28,000 price tag. (Here I am in our kitchen at home, just this past Sunday - yes thats the burner I brought back from Spain hooked up to a propane tank, in our kitchen in San Francisco)

For those on the west coast, I hope youre enjoying this beautiful Indian summer were having, and that the rest of you are experiencing nice fall weather. Until next month.....

And now, onto the wine.
