This month we had 183 winery updates and 145 wineries releasing wine.

It’s my birthday month, so celebrations have been in full swing. Last Thursday my friend Randall and I had dinner at Violetto, located in a stately 1907 Georgian mansion within the Alila Napa Valley resort, right next to Beringer. We chose the tasting menu, which featured an incredible crispy-skinned duck and a truffle risotto so good I savored it one tiny spoonful at a time. The menu beautifully blended Italian and French influences with the spirit of Napa wine country.

Friday night my friend Joe joined Randall and me at Charlie’s, where we shared a seafood platter, the always incredible crispy fried chicken, and a Brown Butter aged Flannery Steak. We kicked things off with a magnum of 2022 School House Chardonnay and finished with a DuMol Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, both of which paired beautifully with the meal.

On Saturday Zac, Lenny, and Anissa came over and we cooked together from 5 in the evening until midnight. We began with a spread of French tinned fish, a sun-dried tomato and olive dip, and Santa Rosa “smoasted” salmon. Randall had brought up mozzarella from Depalo and Sons in Pismo Beach, which we paired with garden-fresh tomatoes. Lenny contributed salmon he had caught the previous week under the Golden Gate Bridge, and we enjoyed some as sushi before cooking the rest. Zac and I prepared Sui Mai filled with pork, cabbage, carrots, and spices, which turned out to be a big hit when we steamed them. I also put out my pickled carrots and jalapeños to add a little extra kick. We had so much left over that we ended up freezing the unagi, prawns, and hamachi.

Lenny’s salmon… let’s just say he won’t be quitting his day job to become a sushi chef. Saturday morning, after playing nine holes in Yountville, we headed to Louis Martini for a tasting focused on their non-Cabernet wines, and later rounded things out with a few Cabernets.
