WineRelease.com's April 15, 2002 Monthly Newsletter

Greetings. WineRelease.com is now 592 wineries strong!

Tax day... Ugh.

For me, April does bring taxes, but also Abalone season. I hosted my annual abalone pot luck on Saturday and used the event to clean my cellar and experiment with wines. Most found the wines that worked best with the delectable crustaceans were Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Viognier.

On to the show...

May 2002 Wine Releases

April's recommended winery mailing lists to join:

Hourglass Winery
Two miles north of St. Helena off Lodi Lane and Highway 29 is where a four acre plot of Cabernet Sauvignon defines the "pinch," or narrowest part of the hourglass shaped Napa Valley. Neighbor vineyards include Grace Family, Vineyard 29, Colgin, Ahern, Korte Ranch, and Folie a Deux. Bob Foley is the winemaker for this small production (1997: 150 cases, 1998: 45 cases, 1999: 130 cases, 2000: 700 cases) winery with a unique vineyard setting that provides both hillside and valley floor microclimates and three separate topographies that create different ripening zones. Three eucalyptus trees flank one vineyard block adding a mint/eucalyptus character. Grapes are harvested and vinefied in separate blocks and then blended.
To get on their mailing list, email owner Jeff Smith (jrsmith@napanet.net).

Titus Vineyards
Robert Parker says "If winemaker Phil Titus and vineyard manager Eric Titus continue to produce wines such as these, they will quickly become two of the most fashionable new names in California winedom."

April's recommended web site to visit:

WineSearcher.com
WineSearcher allows you to search 770 wine store inventories to find wine prices and availability. I find it essential for locating small production wines and to help guide my bidding at wine auctions.

Till next month!
